In between taking Janie to gymnastics and Joel to swimming lessons, Sophie finally takes the time to finish planning the much-anticipated family vacation. Preparing to go camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains this year, there is still much to do before they go~ request time off from work, plan the itinerary, make the reservations, pack…

Without further hesitation, Sophie sits down at the table, blows the bangs out of her eyes and is ready to make final arrangements when in walks Janie with an armful of mail. As Sophie quickly shuffles through the usual stack of advertisements, junk mail and bills, she notices a letter from her favorite cousin, Robin. Wonderful news~ Robin and Tom are finally getting married!

Robin sent a save the date magnet to announce her wedding. Sophie jumps up, ecstatic for her cousin and immediately reaches for the phone.  She then notices that the wedding date falls right in the middle of their vacation. Sophie’s family wouldn't miss this wedding for the world... Considering for a moment the time and money almost spent on preparations for their vacation, Sophie is incredibly grateful for the advanced-notice this save the date has given her. Sophie gladly reschedules the family vacation and sticks the colorful and fun save the date magnet to the fridge!

While Sophie and her family are fictional, there is no doubt that life today is busier than ever and families in general, have an increasing need to stay organized. Save the dates are a leading trend among engaged couples and for very good reasons: they are practical, informational and the added-value of their attractiveness serve as a personal keepsake. Knowing that life is getting busier all the time, many couples are deciding that using a save the date is the best way to get the people they want most~ to be at their wedding. Save the dates are also fun~ offering couples the opportunity to share their style, declare a theme or set the tone of their wedding, right from the start.

By getting the word out early and supplying helpful information, family and friends are then able to make appropriate arrangements in ample time~ especially with destination weddings.  A save the date can feature all the necessary information: dates, phone numbers, hotels and a wedding website to go to for updates.  Also, a picture of the engaged couple on the save the date magnet, card or postcard often gives the first introduction to family and friends.

The wedding invitation used to be the only necessary stationery sent out six to eight weeks ahead of time to announce and invite. Not so anymore. Sent four to 12 months ahead, save the dates are sensible, courteous and nearly a necessity in this fast-paced world where our family and friends are scattered all over the globe. And, with no rules to govern how a save the date should look, couples have free reign to express their uniqueness as a couple and have fun announcing their engagement!
